Honeycomb

notes

This short piece for solo violin is named for the shapes in the salt flats a mile into Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park, Timbisha Shoshone Land. Sometimes when I hike I’m even more aware of my footsteps than the world around me. In Badwater Basin, watching my feet is actually just as stimulating as looking around the valley. These salt formations are delicate but expansive, and they seem even more intricate than the mountains looking up.

Geometry plays out in my meter and note groupings. Pulse of varying consistency is a lot like hiking on beautiful salt with ADHD.

Honeycomb was commissioned in 2020 by Latitude 49 New Music Ensemble for the benefit of the Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts. The Bagatelles Project Album is available here and all proceeds benefit CAAPA.
